Goshala

As quoted in our ancient texts “ Go brahmanebhya shubhamasthu nithyam. Loka samastha sukhino bhavanthu.” Meaning “If cows are protected they protect the living knowledge base of the society.

From time immemorial, in India, the Vedic tradition has encouraged an Agrarian based civilization. Cows have always played a pivotal role in the Vedic Agrarian society. The Cow is revered as the most sacred animal to Hindus, a fact that is evidences by the dedication of several hymns and rituals, reverentially addressing it as ‘GOMATHA’ (divine mother cow) in all the sacred scriptures including Vedas and Puranas. ‘Gomatha’ is a symbolic representation of 33 crore Gods who are said to hold positions in various parts of a cow’s body. As a representation of the divine, all auspicious ceremonies and rituals involve the Cow and its produce. Everything from, milk, butter, ghee, curd, cheese, even the cow’s dung and urine are considered very sacred in Hindu Vedic tradition.

“Unseen they suffer, unheard they cry, in agony they linger, in loneliness they die.”

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judgedment by the way its animals are treated.” Animals need compassion the same as human beings. Among animals, Cow is the ultimate symbol of love, sacrifice and gentleness in Indian culture and tradition. Protection of cow symbolizes protection of all that lives and is weak and helpless. The sancity of the cows is perhaps the foremost sentiment of Hindus for whom this sacred animal has far deeper nuances in Indian culture and ethos than is generally understood. Indian scriptures tell us that the cow is a gift of the gods to the human race. It is a celestial being born of the churning of the cosmic ocean. The cow represents the Divine Mother that sustains all human beings and brings them up as her very own offspring. Cow is understood as Kamdhenu, the wish fulfilling mythical cow, abode of 330 million Indian gods and goddesses. The holy cow is closely connected with Lord Krishna. Among other deeds, Krishna lifted mount Govardhan to protect cows, cowboys and milkmaids. To take care of this innocent and self sacrificing animal is a matter of virtue for Hindus who identify the act as dharma or moral duty. Cow is divine living being on the surface of the earth. It is a very useful animal for entire human race. It is worshipped as a Goddess by Hindus.
